They skip school together, talk about love, religion and politics and dream of lives bigger than their mothers' domesticity. But the growing threat of nuclear war casts a shadow over their lives. Ginger (Elle Fanning) is drawn to poetry and protest, while Rosa (Alice Englert) shows Ginger how to smoke cigarettes, kiss boys and pray. Both rebel against their mothers: Rosa's single mum, Anoushka (Jodhi May), and Ginger's frustrated painter mother, Natalie (Christina Hendricks). Meanwhile, Ginger's pacifist father, Roland (Alessandro Nivola) seems a romantic, bohemian figure to the girls. He encourages Ginger's 'Ban-the-Bomb' activism, while Rosa starts to take a very different interest in him. As Ginger's parents fight and fall apart, Ginger finds emotional sanctuary with a gay couple, both named Mark (Timothy Spall and Oliver Platt), and their American friend, the poet Bella (Annette Bening). Finally, as the Cuban Missile Crisis escalates - and it seems the world itself may come to an end - the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered. Ginger clutches at one hope; if she can help save the world from extinction, perhaps she too will survive this moment of personal devastation. (c) A24 Movie Release on Theater Mar 1, 2013 Limited

Review For Ginger & Rosa
Elle Fanning gives it her all, but is deserving of a better showcase than "Ginger & Rosa" offers her. Dustin Putman-DustinPutman.com ...not only packs a punch but made me actively want to punch the movie's most despicable character Luke Y. Thompson-Nerdist One of the few heartwarming period touches is a deep-yellow egg yolk. Graham Young-Birmingham Mail The dominant hair colour on show makes this feel as it's the dawn of the Swinging Sixties... as seen through rather depressing, ginger-tinted glasses. Graham Young-Birmingham Post Fantastic performances, especially from the young stars, make up for moments of artificiality. Fans of the Beat-era will delight. -Film4 Feels like Potter had a more abstract movie in mind, but tried to package it for a more general audience. David Jenkins-Little White Lies A big disappointment. Philip French-Observer [UK] An extraordinary cast lifts this grim British drama into something watchable, even if the script ultimately gives up trying to make any sense. Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com This is full of fine performances - Fanning's particularly. It's a film that requires commitment, but ultimately rewards your patience. Alex Zane-Sun Online Potter's usual fluency and originality is absent. Who, looking at this, would have thought she made Orlando or The Tango Lesson? -This is London The changing role of women is also an underlying theme in a many-layered but otherwise simply told story. Stella Papamichael-Radio Times A fond celebration of a female friendship shaped by the threat of global annihilation and the first stirrings of the Swinging Sixties. Allan Hunter-This is London You'll be expecting a much better film than the one on offer. Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK] A lovely, open performance from 14-year-old Elle Fanning, playing a troubled British teenager at the time of the October missile crisis in 1962, lifts this movie from Sally Potter. Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK] An instance of the bland leading the bland: an anaemic rumba through the mazes of Memory Lane. Nigel Andrews-Financial Times Potter writes well about the potential of idealism to turn selfish, as a justification for betraying personal ties in the name of a wider philosophy. Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph Beautifully shot and superbly acted, this is an engaging and evocative coming-of-age drama ... Matthew Turner-ViewLondon For a story of illicit lovers, wronged women and anxious protest, Ginger & Rosa lacks one rather important ingredient: passion. Elliott Noble-Sky Movies This isn't so much slow burn as gradual petrification. Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman Despite some strong moments, Ginger and Rosa fails to really convince.
