Review For Hunky Dory | |
Like a retro version of High School Musical with less charm. Leslie Felperin-Variety Heartfelt interpretations of Seventies rock are only part of the appeal of nostalgia-drenched high school drama. John DeFore-Hollywood Reporter It's pleasant, forgettably feelgood and unabashedly hackneyed, doing everything you expect it to - nothing more, nothing less. Aaron Yap-Flicks.co.nz Dory has a spark that never catches fire, leaving the bulk of its personality up to Driver and her interesting take on the often strange moods of this coming-of-age musical drama. Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com There's at least one sub-plot too many, but audiences willing to suspend disbelief will be swept up as the greatest high school band in the history of music perform an impeccable selection of hits. Paul Gallagher-The List The earnest playing of the orchestra and the lo-fi warbling touch the heart in a way that a more polished production might not. Anthony Quinn-Independent If Hunky is hellishly clunky, it's also good-hearted and well-intentioned with some laughs and decent tunes. Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman The kids' final performance is a high note -- rousing and true; final proof that you don't need tidy resolutions to spin a lasting memory. Stella Papamichael-Digital Spy It's all very lovely and very sad. Cynics need not apply. Aging softies will almost certainly yield to Evans's warm sensibilities. Donald Clarke-Irish Times Driver, dialling down her movie star glamour and sporting a credible Welsh accent, is winningly down to earth. Jason Best-Movie Talk The movie isn't bad. Driver is an attractive presence, and it isn't her fault that at times she appears unbearably smug and self-righteous. Philip French-Observer [UK] Despite the good dialogue the script is lacking depth. Donald Munro-Eye for Film Everything will not be quite so Hunky Dory at the box office has it blends into the background of serviceable low-budget Brit flicks. Lisa Giles-Keddie-Real.com Although the film loses focus for a while around two-thirds of the way in, it ends as a well-rounded study of youthful apathy, anger and ambition mixed in with a degree of sexual awakening appropriate for the time. Graham Young-Birmingham Mail A fluffy film about nothing, Minnie Driver and some talented kids keep the cheerful, sunny affair afloat but much like a lazy summer, it's quickly forgotten once it's over. -Film4 Minnie Driver as sweary/smokey inspirational teacher aside, not one destined for the annals of cinema. David Jenkins-Little White Lies The trials and tribulations are familiar and the resolution predictable, but the film has a sweetness and sincerity that's charming. -Liverpool Echo In some respects the picture tries too hard to be too many different things, and Driver's Viv feels underwritten, but the nostalgic, toe-tapping atmosphere and likeable characters carry the day. Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express This will appeal to Glee fans, everybody else may do well to give it a miss. Alex Zane-Sun Online Writer Laurence Coriat fails to come up with any fresh ideas for developing characters or storylines, and the film never has enough sense of pace or direction. Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK] |
